tournament sept 2014

We ran a highly competitive, but very fun squash tournament on Saturday. I'd like to thank all the players for the great spirit in which the games were played and the Sobell team and GLL for their support.

The tournament ran smoothly on the day. The players organised themselves very well. Apart from a very complex draw (I'm a geek - I don't do simple) I didn't have to do much. The players found their opponents themselves, found a court, got someone to mark and played their games. Every game was played in a fair and sporting way, even though there were lots of tight games. Sobell staff regularly checked that we had everything we needed and GLL funded refreshments and trophies.

The opening rounds saw some very close games, but the top 8 seeds all made it though, with Richard Bowman, David Butter, Stuart Murty and Daniel Shrimpton all playing well too. In the fourth round of matches. Rohan Plunkett beat Ben Prichard and Kevin Jackson beat Richard Bangay. Tim Denis played Antonio Petronzio, the number 1 seed and winner of our last 3 or 4 tournaments. The game was very tight, getting to 9-9 in the final game. Tim has sometimes been criticised for being inconsistent and making too many errors. But everyone agrees that his best shots are sublime. He hit two of these unplayable shots to win the game and cause a shock upset.

Tim was a bit too excited about that win to fully concentrate on the final and Rohan won this 2-0. In the B tournament Ross Farquharson beat Donal Murphy in the final.

The top 10 players on the day were:

Rohan Plunkett
Tim Denis
Antonio Petronzio
Benjamin Pritchard
Kevin Jackson
Adam O'Brien
Richard Bangay
Michael Cambell
Richard Bowman
Daniel Shrimpton
